In these Core Competency Webinars we will explore metabolic comorbidities in relation to obesity while considering weight biases and stigma in healthcare. We will also discuss how to work with patients to start implementing lifestyle changes, once the appropriate strategies are identified.

Weight Bias & Stigma by Dr. Sarah Nutter, PhD

Dr. Sarah Nutter is an assistant professor of counselling psychology at the University of Victoria. Her research is broadly focused on weight-related issues, including weight stigma, body image, and eating disorders. She is particularly interested in better understanding the sociocultural foundations of weight stigma as well as the impact of weight stigma on health and healthcare.

Matthew Belviso is Clinical Exercise Physiologist, CSEP High-Performance Specialist and Registered Kinesiologist (R.Kin). He is due to complete his Masters of Science in Kinesiology at Lakehead University in 2022. Dr. Jill Hamilton is a Paediatric Endocrinologist at the Hospital for Sick Children, and Professor of Paediatrics at University of Toronto, Director of the Centre for Healthy Active Kids at SickKids, and Medical Director of the SickKids Team Obesity Management Program (STOMP). She is also a Senior Associate Scientist at SickKids and focuses on childhood obesity, including understanding the pathophysiologic mechanisms of metabolic risk related to weight gain in children and evaluating biologic and psychosocial responses to obesity treatment.

Mental Health and Obesity by Dr. Elizabeth Dettmer, C.Psych & Dr. Alene Toulany, C.Psych

Dr.  Alene  Toulany is an Adolescent Medicine Specialist in the Division of Adolescent Medicine and Assistant Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Toronto. Clinically, she works with adolescents around issues of body image, obesity, eating disorders, and sleep problems. Her academic and research interests include quality of care and health services outcomes for youth with complex chronic medical and mental illnesses.

Dr. Dettmer is licensed as a clinical psychologist with a specialty in health psychology. She is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Paediatrics at the University of Toronto, a Project Investigator with the SickKids Research Institute, and the Mental Health lead of the SickKids Team Obesity Management Program. Dr. Dettmer’s research focuses on how psychological factors impact the development and treatment of obesity. She is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and has extensive experience in training healthcare professionals in the application of MI techniques.

Dr. Stasia Hadjiyannakis is a pediatric endocrinologist and the Medical Director of CHEO’s Center for Healthy Active Living. She is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Ottawa and has been an active member of the Department of Pediatrics at CHEO in the division of endocrinology since November 2001. Her clinical, advocacy and research interests are in the area of pediatric obesity and related co-morbidities. Her research interests are in examining the interplay between behavioural/psychosocial, genetic and intrauterine factors in predicting risk for obesity related co-morbidities.

Dr. Regina is a staff psychologist and project investigator with the SickKids Team Obesity Management Program (STOMP). She is a licensed clinical and health psychologist with a specialty in serving children, adolescents, and families living with complex learning, medical, and mental health needs. She is also an Ontario Certified Teacher. With 15 years of experience working in a hospital, community and school settings, her current work centres on helping young people and their families living with obesity and related psychological and medical needs. In practice, she is a firm believer in Motivational Interviewing as a means of fostering sustainable change.

Melanie Gelfand has been a Registered Clinical Social Worker for over 20 years working with adults, children, families and groups in a variety of settings, which include child welfare, community agencies, primary healthcare and hospitals. Melanie is skilled in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Solutions Focused Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, Emotion Focused Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.
